BLURB: Twenty years ago the UK’s water supply was contaminated with an experimental pathogen, Lycanaeris, causing widespread panic across the nation. Terrorism was suspected but never proven, and when nothing happened–no epidemic, no unexplained illnesses–the whole episode was written off as an elaborate hoax. But Lycanaeris was selective. Only those of a certain age, and with a specific gene in their DNA were infected. Time would reveal the pathogen’s true nature, when those susceptible grew up Altered.
Daniel is one of thousands forced to hide his altered status by living a quiet life. He’s not like the others, though. Daniel can’t help looking so distinctive or being able to see every altered for what they really are. To those abducting altereds, that skill makes him valuable. For Jordan, shifting from human to wolf means living under the radar to avoid unwanted attention. Meeting Daniel complicates matters. Daniel’s existence is a threat to Jordan and his friends, but Jordan can’t seem to shake the strange connection between them. When danger threatens, there’s little time for Daniel and Jordan to work out their feelings before lives are at stake.
Recently, I have been fortunate to read a very good fantasy novel. When I read the reviews for the first book in this series, I decided that I would read it as soon as possible. Then, a few nights ago, I had the pleasure of speaking with the author who gave me the honor of reviewing both the original novel “Altered” and its sequel, “Altered2,” which will be released today.
“Altered” was not intended initially to be part of a series, but rather a single novel. However, the author felt the characters could be further developed. She has done a wonderful job here!
The first book begins 20 years after a significant event occurred in the UK—a contamination that has caused genetic mutations in the population. Some people of a certain age undergo physical changes that may turn them into wolves—shifters. Others have the gift of a Seer, allowing them to recognize shifters upon sight. The shifters are always alert and try to hide themselves because even after so many years have passed since that event, there are still people trying to capture them for study. Obviously, their sworn enemies are the Seers, who are able to identify shifters even under their human guise.
The story unfolds from the meeting of Daniel and Jordan one night in a bar. Jordan is a shifter who lives with friends Sam, Keira, and Charlie. Sam and Keira are full shifters. Charlie, however, is a half-shifter—a person infected with the virus who never takes the full form of a wolf, but rather displays partial features like fangs and claws. Daniel is a seer who lives with his best friend Matt, a half-shifter, and Ash, an ordinary guy who moved in with them after being kicked out of his previous house.
Despite being affected by mutations and therefore viewed as “altered” by ordinary people, a Seer is also considered an enemy by others who have been mutated because a Seer can recognize and expose them. Hence, Seers do not belong to either of these worlds. Although the government has declared that the draft study was closed and all the documentation has been destroyed, Seers continue to be hunted and recruited to flush out shifters.
The relationship between Jordan and Daniel begins with mistrust on both sides, albeit for different reasons. Both species are in constant danger, so it is not surprising that suspicion exists between the two boys—suspicion that is also fueled by their many friends.
Various characters meet and blend well with each other.
In the first book there is more action. The suspense runs parallel to the plot of the romantic story between Jordan and Daniel. What I like is that even though it appears clear from the outset that Jordan and Daniel are mate, there is still tension in the construction of their relationship. It doesn’t happen all at once but evolves gradually.
This first volume is a great mix of action, suspense and romance that keeps the reader glued till the last page.

BLURB: A remote farmhouse in Cornwall seems the perfect place for Ash to settle into his recently altered status. Starting a new life there with Sam—the shifter he can’t stay away from—should be easy this far from London where they faced so much danger. So why does adjusting seem impossible?
Sam has issues of his own. He has to get used to his human form again after living the last eight years as a wolf. It’s hard when human worries weigh so heavily on his shoulders. Life is much more straightforward from a wolf’s perspective, until Ash needs his human support.Ash’s problem is simple: he’s fearful of shifting fully. How can he believe he won’t hurt Sam when his genes were altered to create a killer? Despite repeated reassurance, his anger and resentment increase. Only one thing is certain: if Ash can’t learn to trust himself soon, he’s in danger of proving himself right.
The second book in this engaging series is “Altered 2” and comes out for publication today. Thanks to the author, I was pleased to read this story in preview. “Altered 2” focuses on the relationship between two characters that we met in the first novel: Sam and Ash.
If you have read “Altered”, then you definitely will not want to wait to read this sequel! Where the first novel was action-packed, “Altered 2” focuses more on the psychological aspect of the story. It is a very good follow-up and completes the series nicely.
Sam has spent the last eight years of his life as a wolf, to escape the pain of the rejection of his family who has driven him from home at age 16 along with twin sister Keira, when she has undergone the mutation. a Despite the meeting with Jordan and Charlie with which they built an extended family, and despite the guilt he feels for leaving his sister alone to face and manage a very hard time of their lives, he is not able to return to live in his human part, not until Ash will be in danger.
After being kicked out of his house, Ash lived on the streets until he met Daniel and Matt and was welcomed into their home. Although he is a human, free of mutations, he does not hesitate to fight alongside his friends, facing any consequences with them.
I will not reveal too much and spoil your reading enjoyment. I will only say that Ash and Sam are two people who need each other to feel complete. Their relationship morphs from “Altered”, where it began in a completely subconscious way. Here, in “Altered 2”, it develops and we see how these two characters help themselves, as well as take care of each other.
I can’t wait to read the third book! The author has already said it will be about Matt, and that there will again be an action level more on par of what was seen in the first volume. I advise you not to miss this series. I need to thank very much Jay Northcote for having recommended Annabelle Jacobs to me!
The covers were both designed by Natasha Snow. They are simple but very effective.
Among the editors of the first volume we found Posy Roberts, one of the writers who is part of the project “Blanket Fort Press” in which we found the very talented authors Jay Northcote, Posy Roberts, Teegan Loy, and Annabelle Jacobs. HERE you can found some news about them.
